Cantonese: 颱風=toi-fung(typhoon) 苗柏=miu-baak(Merbok, a Malaysian dove)

Whether it be a low-pressure system, a tropical depression, a tropical storm, etc.; so long as the Observatory gives it a funny name and hoist some numbered signals, the farmers call it a typhoon.
No matter how you call it, when it hits you, the outcome is the same. (rc)

It was bright and sunny yesterday. By 22:00, the Observatory hoisted typhoon signal no. 1, the downpour had already started.
The preventative measures obviously could not cope with the heavy rain overnight. The lady farmers started to deepen the ditches to drain the rainwater off the field as soon as they arrive the farm. Fortunately, the winds were not as strong as expected.
It will take some time for the crops to regain their vitality after typhoon Merbok is gone. (rc)
